Routes, climbs, and road conditions around Jávea
The area has two distinct riding zones that suit different training goals — flat coastal roads for tempo and brick sessions, and immediate access to mountain climbs from town.
Coastal roads
The CV-734 between Dénia and the Granadella headland is rolling, smooth, and good for training. Traffic is minimal between October and April. The road surface is generally well-maintained by Spanish road standards.
Mountain climbing
The Marina Alta mountains start immediately behind the town. The benchmark climb is Coll de Rates — 636 m, 9 km at ~5% average gradient, consistent and well-surfaced. It’s popular with professional teams wintering in the area and is a reliable marker session for tracking fitness.
From Jávea you can link multiple climbs into longer loops — combinations with Jesús Pobre, Gata de Gorgos, and the road over to Benissa give you 80–120 km days with 1,500–2,500 m of climbing.
Road conditions
Roads in the area are narrow B-roads with occasional rough patches, but broadly usable on road bikes. The main CV roads are well-surfaced. The biggest hazard in winter is morning damp on north-facing descents — standard caution applies.
